Drouhin Laroze, Gevrey Chambertin, En Champs, 2020

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Drouhin Laroze, Gevrey Chambertin, En Champs, 2020

A fine, cool village vineyard situated on the northern side of Gevrey. The 2020 opens up with a cool, fresh-berried nose, some tangy fruit skin and black raspberry notes with lovely, detailed tannins. Overall one senses a certain shyness at the moment but with a good amount of concentration and power underlying. This is all very well put together and has everything in place to develop nicely. Likely to be one of the best value picks. Fully destemmed and aged in 40% new oak.

ABV:
13.5%
89-91/100
Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs has a little more volume on the nose compared to the "Dix Climats", the fruit slightly darker with hints of blueberry and iris flower. The palate is well-balanced with supple, quite fleshy tannins, slightly confit-towards the finish that just shaves away a little sophistication. Otherwise, this should give 10-12 years of drinking pleasure.

Drouhin Laroze

Drouhin Laroze

Drouhin-Laroze is a great domaine re-born. Set up in 1919 when Suzanne, the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Laroze, married Alexandre Drouhin. Her father’s Gevrey-Chambertin and her husband’s Chambolle-Musigny estates were united to form Drouhin-Laroze, a domaine that has been exploiting the Côte de Nuits’ best vineyards ever since. After sharing the winemaking with his father in 2000, Philippe Drouhin took full control of the vineyard and winery from the 2001 vintage, beginning the re-incarnation of this great Burgundian domaine. As of ths 2017 vintage Philippe's son and daughter, Caroline and Nicolas, have taken the reins and as a result the domaine looks set to reach even higher levels of quality. Judicious use of whole bunch ferments, depending on the vineyard and vintage, and a more closely managed oak barrel regime designed to reduce oak impact on the wines, are just two noticeable enhancements that have given the wines greater clarity and personality.
