Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Jacques Frederic Mugnier, Nuits St Georges, Clos de La Maréchale, 1er Cru, 2015

A splendid rendition of Maréchale, all of the force complexity, drive and minerality you could hope for, but with a more voluptuous side than usual. Wonderfully velvety, caressing but strong fruit notes of damson, sloe, spice and earth. Clos de la Maréchale was taken back from Faiveley by Freddy Mugnier as of the 2004 vintage. At 9 hectares, it is the largest monopole in the Cote d’Or. Based in the Premeaux Prissey commune, where the wines are very structured, Clos de La Maréchale is built for ageing. Freddy Mugnier’s skill has been in taming the naturally tannic character of the wines without suppressing any vineyard expression.

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de Maréchales 1er Cru has a vivid, captivating bouquet of blackberry, raspberry coulis and violet aromas that gain momentum with aeration. The mineral-driven palate is well balanced, displaying clever use of new oak, a fine bead of acidity and a classy, poised finish that lingers. Yet it declines in the glass, especially on the finish, indicating some taint. I will have to reserve judgment for now, but there is certainly a fine wine behind that TCA. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Jacques Frederic Mugnier

Created in 1863, this is a family estate run from the Château de Chambolle-Musigny. For years this was a miniscule four hectare Chambolle domaine, but since Frédéric Mugnier took back the family’s old Nuits St-Georges Monopole, Clos de la Maréchale, from Faiveley in 2004, the Domaine increased to 13 hectares. The aim is to produce wines that are each representative of their respective terroir and vintage, while at the same time having their individual character, wines of harmony and sincerity. This is achieved by eliminating weed-killers and industrial fertilisers in the vineyard; neither of these have been used for 10 years, whilst in the cellars all processes that traumatise the wine, over extraction, for example, or excessive woodiness, are limited to a minimum. To allow each terroir to express itself, the wine making is excatly the same for all of the wines. These are sensual, stylish Burgundies of great finesse.
