Volnay, Clos des Angles, 1er Cru, 2017
Another archetypal Volnay. Exquisitely pretty cherry blossom aromas, preceding a wonderfully fluid and sensual palate of ripe damson and cherry fruit. This is more complete and deeper than we can ever remember. The finest Clos des Angles we have tasted. When the chance to purchase vines in this fabulous Clos came up in 2006, Guillaume d'Angerville jumped at it. Making it the Domaine's first vineyard expansion since 1906. The first vintage under its own label was 2008. The vineyard's soil is deep but there is a gentle slope to ensure good drainage.
critic reviews
Wafting from the glass with beautiful aromas of rose petal, violets, cherries and raspberries, the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles is medium-bodied, ample and charming, with an exuberantly expressive core of pure, succulent fruit, framed by fine, chalky tannins.
The 2017 Volnay Clos des Angles 1er Cru shows quite a bit of reduction on the nose tasting it from barrel. The palate is more compact than the Volnay Premier Cru, more muscular, although I find it needs a little more grace towards the finish. Give this two or three years once in bottle.
