Volnay, Taillepieds, 1er Cru, 2017
Superb. A Volnay of drive, depth and intense minerality. Thoroughly accomplished, powerful but noble. Darker fruit than the Caillerets with a more forceful stony quality. Brooding and deep with notes of black cherry, bullace, rocks and undergrowth. Deep and needs time but great potential. So layered and flavoursome but energetic with it. In perfect harmony. From a parcel in the high, southern part of the village. The slope here is very steep and well exposed, the soil is very white, poor and stony, yielding wines that are racy and tight-packed in their youth but reward hugely given time.
critic reviews
The 2017 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has perhaps the most airy bouquet, it is very transparent at the moment, but the palate is much tighter and backward. There is good backbone here, but it is sulking and it is probably one of the Domaine’s wines that will require the longest bottle age. It has an almost Pommard-like austerity towards the finish. Excellent but one of the more challenging wines from the domaine.
