Philippe Colin, Chassagne Montrachet, Les Vergers, 1er Cru, 2015

The deep clay dominated soils here give this wine a texture and body whilst the relative coolness of this terroir imparts a wonderful freshness and definition to the wine. The soil’s water-retentive properties were vital in the sun-dried 2015 vintage. Neither broad nor skinny this is beautifully weighted, silky and lush Chassagne that maintains great focus and precision, notes of lime butter, citrus peel and limeflower, earth and acacia honey.

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet of light tropical fruit infused with touches of pressed white flowers. There is a very slight reduction, but it works well. The palate is well balanced, with a fat, slightly honeyed opening, a fine thread of acidity, and hints of praline and almond that linger in the mouth long after the wine has departed. This is a generous, flavorsome Chassagne-Montrachet that is probably best broached in the flush of youth. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
