Bollinger, la Grande Année, Rosé, 2014

A blend of 73%Grand Cru and 27% premier cru wine the grape blend made up of 62% Pinot Noir and 38% Chardonnay, 23 different crus, 8% red wine is added into the blend , from la cote aux enfants. In traditional Bollinger fashion the wine is initially fermented in small old oak barrels, followed by secondary bottle fermentation. A beautifully translucent salmon pink colour, a toasty, brooding slightly surly and wild nose that reflects the barrel fermentation, however it soon unveils a plethora of bright summery fruit with aeration, this is intense long and precise, the great richness and acidity of the 2002 vintage is offset by more light-hearted floral characteristics of raspberries and redcurrants. This should be approached from 2012 at the earliest.

Pale coral with a glimmer of gold, the La Grand Annee Rosé 2014 is a 63% Pinot Noir and 37% Chardonnay blend with 5-6% of still Cote Aux Enfants Pinot Noir. The blend was vinified together in small oak barrels and aged on fine lees until it was manually riddled and disgorged March 2022 with a seven gram per liter dosage. Revealing beautifully vinous and savory aromas of red currants, apricot turnover, bergamot, walnuts and lemon oil, this 2014 rosé opens onto a full-bodied, open-knit palate brimming with mineral-rich salinity, buoyant acidity and a savory red fruit finish with a little tannic grip. Wonderful, vinous champagne that is gastronomic and opulent.

There are seldom few who are not familiar with the Champagne house, Bollinger. Firmly positioned as a Grande Marques, Bollinger dates back to 1829, when Jacques Bollinger and Paul Renaudin began creating these exquisite and highly traditional wines. The house flourished under the leadership of Madame Lily Bollinger, who often rode her bicycle around the vineyard and was known for remarking when asked about her 1955 Vintage, “I drink it when I’m happy, and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.”

Now, her great-nephew, Ghislain de Montgolfier is at the helm. Fermentation takes place in used oak barrels and extended ageing sur lies last between 6 and 9 years prior to disgorging. Doseage is low to ensure balance and finesse, with many wines being riddled by hand, including the simply stunning Grande Annee.
