Royale Réserve, Non Dosé, nv

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Philipponnat’s Royale Réserve bottlings offer up the signature Philipponnat traits of power and vibrancy – the perfect introduction to the house style. Both Brut and Non Dosé cuvées are a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay with up to a third of the blend made up of ‘perpetual reserve’ wines, the subject of much recent innovation at Philipponnat. The Non Dosé is one of the best we’ve come across, wonderfully defined flavours on the nose, clear and lively, with tension, verve and crisply set, steely fruit flavours. Pleasingly there’s no austerity here, just an extra sense of cut and clarity over the Brut. Exceptionally refreshing. A wine of wonderful purity. Dosage 0 grams. Base vintage 2012.

A blend of 65% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and 3% Pinot Meunier, the NV Royale Reserve Non Dose offers up aromas of white flowers, jasmine, menthol, iodine and crisp apple mingled with delicate notes of curry leaf. Medium to full-bodied, tense and fresh, it's textured with bright acids and a chalky, mouthwatering finish. Based on the 2020 vintage, it include 34% vins de reserve.

The NV Royale Réserve Non Dosé is terrific. Bit offers a fine interplay of citrus and floral notes, but with a bit more poise and better balance than the straight Réserve. I especially admire its energy and persistence. This is a tasty non-dosé Champagne that hits all the right notes in style. Disgorged: January 2024.

Royale Reserve Non-Dosé NV is a zero-dosage rendition of the Philipponnat Brut NV that is a 67% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Meunier blend disgorged in February 2023. Wonderfully fresh and bright from the start, it fills the glass with crisp yellow apple, lemon sorbet, wet stone and chalk aromas that have a delicate creaminess. Light to medium-bodied, the palate is all precision with racy acid wound tightly around a lemony, orchard fruit core and a mineral-edged finish. A delicious wine that will sing in tune with a meal.
