    Bernard Faurie, Hermitage, 2016

    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
    Bernard Faurie, Hermitage, 2016

Incredibly pure cherry fruit, lively and crisp, notes of violet, herb and cocoa built on solid but not overwhelming tannic foundations and encircled by enlivening but not austere freshness. Powerful, bright and with bags of character. Every year we taste a few of Bernard's blends including his two best vineyards, on paper at least, the Meal and Bessard. But it is this one, Meal Bessard and Greffieux that consistently comes out on top and the one which we always end up shipping. Made the traditional way, whole bunch fermentation, gentle extraction and aged in used demi muid casks.

    Bernard Faurie

Since 1980, the amiable and enthusiastic Bernard Faurie has slowly built up his Domaine, with holdings in Les Greffieux, Bessard and Le Méal at just over 0.5 hectares to nearly two hectares. The wines are made traditionally, with 100% whole bunches every year, and are aged in used oak demi-muid barrels for 18 months before bottling. These are beautifully pure, wild, traditonally-made examples of Hermitage, being packed with aromas of violet and flavours of crunchy, powerful and spicy hedgerow fruit flavours. The Hermitage we buy is a blend of Greffieux, Bessard and Méal. Bernard is one of Hermitages true artisanal heroes. Long made he put off retirement!
