A spellbinding wine of juicy, silky and floral red fruit with a gentle salty minerality coming from the granite soils. This may not shout Cornas but it is a wine of sheer elegance and plenty of terroir character. Notes of wild red berries, alpine strawberries, red cherry and damson with a twist of rock salt. Flowing, seamless and moreish. A south east facing vineyard parcel on decomposed granite that usually forms part of the Gore cuvee, however in cooler, fresher vintages when Gore cannot be made, the riper Ogre cuvee is kept separate and produced on its own. The vines are 50 years old and the soil is very particular.
On the evidence of owner Mathieu Barret’s first vintage, this Domaine is going places quicker than the TGV. He is a young star who runs his 4 hectares of vineyards biodynamically, one of the only one do so in the region. He owns three parcels of south and southeast exposed vines in the Arlettes, Mazards and Reynards that average 30 years old. The grapes are destalked and vinified in cement eggs and then aged in used oak demi-muids. These is Cornas with a difference, striking bright and almost burgundian in style.
