Domaine La Barroche
Châteauneuf du Pape, Julien Barrot, 2021
justerini & brooks tasting note
The wine that used to be called “Signature.” A silky, aromatic blend supports griotte, sloes, pepper and touches of rose. Plummy on the palate but not heavy, a nice gentle grip gives the wine momentum allied to breadth. Fluid fruits with a snap and brittle brambly complexity. A blend of 14 parcels, mainly old vines Grenache (50 to 100 years old), with 20% Mourvedre, the balance made up of Syrah and Cinsault. Aged in large old wooden casks.

The 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Julien Barrot delivers taut strawberry and raspberry fruit. The tannins in this medium to full-bodied wine are silky, but the long, crisp finish comes across slightly tart and edgy. It's a solid effort for the vintage.
