Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domaine Saint Prefert, Châteauneuf du Pape, Colombis, 2019

A calm, composed, gently aromatic nose of red berry and anise. A very elegant and focused style of Châteauneuf. Fragrant and stylish fruit, offering a red berry, damson and victoria plum fruit profile on the palate. Rich and ripe but there is great nuance and refinement to this, too. The long finish shimmers with notes of flower, berries and star anise. Beautifully balanced, with sufficient grip and freshness to offset the vintage’s naturally ripe inclination. Stunning. The elegant side of Châteauneuf. From Grenache vines located in the sandy “Colombis” lieu dit - fermented with whole bunches and aged in demi muid barrels.

Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Deep, shimmering ruby. Expansive, mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berry preserve, incense, cola and garrigue qualities on the finely detailed nose. Palate-staining cherry pie, raspberry, boysenberry, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors show uncanny energy for their depth. The spice and floral notes dominate a seriously long, sappy finish framed by velvety, well-knit tannins.

Domaine Saint Prefert

Domaine Saint Prefert

Situated in the same Quartier des Serres as it was back in 1930s, when it was among the first Châteauneuf du Pape estates to sell its wines in bottle, St Prefert is an historic state with some great terroir, old vines and a large proportion of Mourvedre, with the potential to produce very special wines that have their own distinctive personality. This is exactly what owner Isabel Ferrando has succeeded in achieving since taking over the estate in 2003. Traditionally made, using whole bunch fermentation, with concrete tanks and used oak hogsheads for ageing, these are wines of personality and life that have a great deal to say about where they are from. A stellar estate.
