Jean Louis Chave, Côtes du Rhône, Moncoeur, Selection, 2019
Josh Raynolds, Vinous
Dark, bright-rimmed ruby. An expressive bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, licorice and candied flowers, along with a suggestion of cracked pepper. Smooth, sappy and expansive in the mouth, offering intense cherry, black raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a hint of cola. Finishes smoky, spicy and quite long, with sneaky tannins lending shape and subtle grip.

Jean Louis Chave

The sublime quality of the wines at this Domaine have meant that there has always been a long queue of Wine Merchants desperate for a glimpse of the Chave cellars. Gerard's son, Jean-Louis makes the wine at the Estate now and his ideal is to produce wine that is as pure an expression of the grape and terroir as possible. He achieves this by only vinifying the healthiest grapes produced from low yielding vines, intervening as little as possible while making the wine and bottling without filtration. His wines are some of the Rhône’s most precise and sophisticated examples. Aside from Jean-Louis' rigorous hands-on work and incredible knowledge of the terroirs at his disposal, other factors that yield wines of such clarity and personality are: small, individual plot fermentations and ageing, limited use of whole bunches adapted to the wine and the vintage and a neutral oak barrels. Jean-Louis Chaves' selection wines are benchmark wines packed with regional character, that are made from a mixture of declassified domaine fruit and grapes that are grown by Jean-Louis in conjunction with other vignobles, exemplary value they represent a taste of Chave winemaking at a fraction of the cost.
