Carl Loewen
Riesling, 1896, 2025
justerini & brooks tasting note
Wilder and initially a bit more fruit-driven, but dry tasting on the finish, the black label 1896 needs a bit more time to reveal itself; we tasted just after bottling. Complex and deep with enormous character, it comes from the lowest parcel in the Herrenberg, abutting the river. The grapes are picked as one full block, pressed by hand in traditional wooden basket press as hard as possible, and left to settle overnight. It ferments spontaneously on the full lees and is left to run to a natural stop (9g RS in 2025). Production remains just one fuder barrel a year.
