    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Emrich Schönleber, Mineral, Riesling, Trocken, 2013

Initially smoky, piquant and a little reticent, with air a lovely floral quality emerges. The overriding impression is elegance, but there is a core of firm slatey material below. Any hint of austerity is counteracted by impressive levels of extract and savoury minerals. Another very good ‘Mineral’ that lives up to its name.

This is sourced to a significant degree from young vines in the top-notch Halenberg and Auf der Lay vineyards. It lives up to its name on the nose, evoking ocean breeze in its combination of alkalinity and salinity. Behind that, tangerine and lime deliver zesty pungency while a brothy sense of meat stock is reminiscent of Chablis, a comparison that has fit this bottling on more than one occasion. At around 13% alcohol, there is a fullness one does not usually expect with a Schönleber “Mineral” Riesling, but fortunately, neither heat nor heaviness. The finish comes off like a mouthwatering suffusion of mineral matter in a citrus and meat stock matrix.

A great Nahe estate that was started by Werner Schönleber in the 1960s with just two hectares. Today the estate comprises 14 hectares, mainly Riesling, on the slate and quartzite soils of the Halenberg and Frühlingsplatzchen vineyards. Intense vineyard work and spontaneous fermentation in old oak casks together with ageing in steel vat conspire to produce intense, long lived Nahe Riesling that combines floral, charming qualitites with intense minerality. For the last five years, this estate has been perfoming to is maximum, rivalling Germany’s very greatest producers.
