Hipping, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2024
The 2024 is a more herbal noted Hipping incarnate, offering expressive notes of fine lime and rangpur, crushed mint and lemongrass on the nose – going into verbena. On the palate, tighter berries and light citrus and slate smoke– pomelo and salted peaches. A nicely detailed Hipping: one that is less exuberant than the 2023 and 2022; more on the detail and slim, wiry fruits. Produced from a blend of 4 small plots, fermented and aged in 1200L cask. Hipping is a justly famous, steep, southeast/east facing vineyard on red slate – along with Pettenthal, one of the key sites in the Roter Hang.
critic reviews
The 2024 Hipping Nierstein Riesling GG is deep, clear, fresh and refined on the elegant and aromatic nose. Fresh, round and savory on the palate, this is a full-bodied, elegant and sharp, saline and savory-finishing Riesling with nervy acidity, a persistent mineral expression and promising aging potential. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted in August 2025.
The 2024 Riesling Niersteiner Hipping Grosses Gewächs was co-harvested across several parcels with varying expositions. Its initially smoky reduction gives way to a supple sense of crushed, savory deadnettle. The palate immediately adds a stony verve that brings out red apple, grapefruit peel and foliage notes. Its peppery savoriness is not unlike arugula. There is a saltiness here, with a lasting herbal savor. The 2024 is wonderful, understated, long and distinctly elegant. (Bone-dry)
