critic reviews
A wine like this gives us new appreciation of a workhorse grape like Falanghina. When made in the right hands, this native varietal with roots in antiquity can produce delightful results with surprising nuance and elegance. That's what you get with the Quintodecimo 2022 Irpinia Falanghina Via del Campo, a release of 31,000 bottles. The wine reveals good texture and a slightly waxy feel with hints of the dried tropical fruits and grapefruit-like aromas you get from the grape skins. One-third of the wine goes into oak, and that also adds to the spiciness and textural support of this wine. It shows much more fruit weight and depth when considered on a scale of Falanghina wines.
Green melon, candied lime, freshly sliced Granny Smith apple and crushed rocks form a captivating bouquet as the 2022 Falanghina Via del Campo comes to life in the glass. This is soft and supple, quite textural, with a mineral tinge up front further enhanced by brisk acidity as tart orchard fruits and citrus tones keep the tension high. The 2022 finishes crisply refreshing yet remarkably long with a cheek-puckering sour melon concentration. The potential here is very high. The Via del Campo displays this ripe vintage's best attributes and a minerality that perfectly balances the expression.
