Situated in southern Italy, Campania is often referred to as the shin of Italy's boot. Characterized by a hilly-mountainous terrain, Campania produces quality whites and reds, ranging from light and simple to robust, complex and full bodied. Producers of quality tend to plant at relatively high elevations to ensure significant diurnal temperature variation; essential for maintaining lively acidities in the wines.
Campania is home to a few of Italy’s most celebrated appellations, namely Irpinia, Taurasi, Greco di Tufo and Fiano d’Avellino. Irpinia and Taurasi are renowned for exceptional Aglianico red wines, which tend to be bold and robust, though highly individual. Greco di Tufo is a white wine appellation produced from the grape variety that bears its name. Elevation here tends to be 400-500m above sea level. Along with Greco di Tufo, Fiano d’Avellino is considered one of the best white wine appellations in Italy, planted generally on mineral-rich, volcanic soils.
Campania produces a vast array of wines from primarily indigenous grape varieties. Some of the most prominent white grapes in the region include Falanghina, known for its zesty citrus flavors; Fiano, admired for its rich, nutty aromas; and Greco di Tufo, cherished for its minerality and complexity. On the red front, Aglianico is the star, producing wines of profound depth and complexity.
