    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

As is often the case, this is the darkest in colour of the three Azelia crus. It offers a wonderful balance of fresh acids, sweet dark fruit, intense spices and a firm tannic spine. The flavours are intense and strong but are by no means too overwhelming, flavours of bramble, cherry, mocha and cinnamon with liquorice and mineral notes, despite how dense and solid the wine is, there is tremendous edge and thrust to it as well. Stunningly balanced and deeply complex. Another top notch Serralunga vineyard that faces south and south west, where the soils are practically 100% clay, a very hard compact white clay. The vines are 60 years old and the wine is aged in the same way as the Bricco Fiasco, for 24 months in 15% new oak barriques.

The 2011 Barolo San Rocco shows focused intensity with a pretty array of varietal characteristics. Boasting the best of Nebbiolo, the wine shows dark fruit nuances with smoke, tobacco, tar and black olive. This expression also offers lasting structure with evident tannic firmness and long persistence.

As it usually is, the 2011 Barolo San Rocco is the darkest and richest of the Azelia Barolos, but it too is quite polished in this vintage. Dark red cherries, licorice, spices and new leather flesh out in a Barolo that shows the depth of Serralunga, but with gorgeous mid-palate pliancy, silky tannins and soft contours for a young Barolo. Here, too, the wine's balance is incredibly alluring, especially since the San Rocco has a history of drinking well throughout its entire life.
