Elio Altare, Barolo, Cerretta, Vigna Bricco, 2010

Compact but alluringly velvety, there is enormous potential here. A great Barolo that is not revealing all now, it will take time, but all the elements are there. The balance is impeccable and the flavours effortless. Dark fruit, liquorice and mineral-smacked. Long, layered, powerful but slick.A fine Serralunga vineyard produced for the first time by Altare in the 2006 vintage, Cerretta is made and aged the same way as the estate's other Barolos, 24 months in a third new oak but with an extra two years bottle age before release. Less than 5,000 bottles are made a year.

Not surprisingly, the 2010 Barolo Vigna Bricco Cerretta is the most closed of these 2010s from Altare. Today the fruit and Serralunga tannin dominate, while the aromas and flavors are still opening up. Firm Serralunga tannins support a powerful, incisive finish full of mineral and ferrous notes to match the wine's broad shoulders. Cerretta is a vineyard with a number of different exposures, something I didn't fully appreciate until this year. Altare's plot sits right next to Ceretto's Prapò, so it is not surprising both wines share certain elements of Serralunga darkness and virility.
