Fratelli Alessandria

Barolo, Gramolere, 2020

justerini & brooks tasting note

Gramolere displays and array of pixellated fruits, in a redder register than usual in 2020. It exudes wafts of damson, red cherry, star anise and fresh mint, with cooling forest fruits in support. Not a dense wine, the acidity and tannins are crisp and composed. From a 2ha plot inherited by Vittore’s mother, a Manzone (of the Giovanni Manzone estate). Steep and west facing at 400m elevation, the vines are an impressive 60 years old and harvest takes place a week later here than in Verduno.

critic reviews

93/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the Fratelli Alessandria 2020 Barolo Gramolere is slight and lean in terms of mouthfeel and has aromas of blackcurrant, crushed stone and grilled herb. This vintage is certainly shorter than previous years, although there is lots of nice freshness. The Gramolere is poised for a short to medium-term drinking window.

The 2020 Barolo Gramolere is laced with hints of dried cherry, menthol, spice, dried herbs and a whole range of balsamic inflections that add character. Like all the 2020s here, the Gramolere shows good vineyard character, but in a decidedly slender, light style relative to most years.
