Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Fratelli Brovia, Barolo, Rocche di Castiglione, 2018

Complex, stylish and glitzy bejewelled red berries with a cool mineral core, Rocche is routinely stony, fine-tuned and fresh – here it stops short of austerity, instead commanding the palate through its vibrancy of fruit, bramble, spearmint, and raspberry. Long and sparkling, there is so much to love here. A steep, south-east facing Castiglione vineyard with a touch of sand in the clay soils giving fresh, fragrant, elegant wines. Aged in large used oak casks for two years.

Brovia's 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione opens with pretty aromatics that are such a signature of this site. Crushed flowers, mint, tobacco, cedar and sweet red cherry lend quite a bit of perfume. On the palate, the Rocche is a bit light, but it offers good balance and a fine sense of proportion within the context of the year. It's hard to get past the short, abrupt finish. The charm and seduction of Rocche are missing.

Fratelli Brovia

Fratelli Brovia

Brovia are a traditional Barolo producer, in the winemaking sense not in the vineyard sense. That is to say yields are low but the fermentations are natural and happen in cement tanks before ageing in large old oak casks for 3 years. The estate is situated in Castiglione Falleto between Azelia and Scavino, their vineyards are spread over the Castiglione and Serralunga communes. The wines are pure, characterful and gripping but in a very gentle and moreish style, they have great intensity and charm whilst also expressing individuality and reflect the distinct differences between their great terroirs.
