Barolo, Ginestra, 2000
An easier access Monforte d’Alba than usual but not at the expense of classic, meaty and mineral Monforte character. Though open and accessible, not lacking force or muscle. A good, fine tannic grip ably supporting the dark savoury, berry, blood orange and chalk characteristics. Wonderfully clear and clean on the saline finish. From South facing vines in the stellar Ginestra Cru of Monforte d’Alba situated at between 300-350 metres above sea level. The wine is aged in large, old 35hl French cask for 3 years followed by a further 6-12 months ageing in bottle.
critic reviews
The Barolo and Barolo Riserva are the two wines to look for from this house, and while waiting for the soon to be released 1999 Barolo Riserva, there is no reason not to enjoy the classic 2000 Barolo Ginestra with its aromas of plums, truffles, tar, and mint, its round and solid palate, excellent continuity, and lengthy, balsamic finish. Medium amber-tinged red. Pretty, perfumed aromas of rose petal, tobacco, leather and truffley underbrush. Then less open in the mouth than on the nose: dense and sweet but also juicy and penetrating, with sound acids for the year. Finishes with substantial chewy tannins that largely avoid dryness.
