    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
    Paolo Scavino, Barolo, Monvigliero, 2012

Airy and fresh flavours, complex too. Notes of cassis, black cherry and blueberry tinged with a touch of liquorice; Long vital and fresh dark fruits, expanding into flavours of salt and stone. Verve, refinement and intense, this is utterly breath-taking. From a fine vineyard at 310 metres altitude in the Verduno commune with a south / south east exposure. A special micro climate close to the river where there are big day /night temperature differences. A very distinctive personality, powerful but polished, fresh and finely balanced. Only 5,000 bottles were made.

Scavino’s 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is bright and aromatically effusive, as Barolos from this site tend to be, but on the palate, it is quite a bit more reserved. It will be interesting to see if the 2020 emerges with time in bottle, as today, it is dominated by fierce tannins. Dried fruit, tobacco, mint and worn-in leather linger. Ideally, I would like to see more Monvigliero sensuality here.
