    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Piero Busso, Barbaresco, Albesani, VV, 2011

From the middle part of the Albesani vineyard, the steepest part of the hill, and exclusively from old vines planted in 1948 from the original Nebbiolo michet clone. Ageing is for 30 months in large casks. Barely more than a 1000 bottles are made in only the best vintages. Powerful and dark in initially, hints of liquorice, asian spice and musk, then the red fruit, blossom and roses start to shine through. Explosive on entry but there is great persistence and finesse too. Long, layered silky flavours. Complete seduction.

The just-bottled 2011 Barbaresco Albesani Viti Vecchie is an infant. All of the Albesani signatures are in place, but today it is the wine's tannins that dominate. With time in the glass hints of hard candy, sweet red fruit and flowers begin to emerge. The hot dry conditions during the growing season caused some issues with dehydration, which may have also manifested itself with concentrated tannins. There is plenty of time to see if more vintage 2011 radiance emerges with further bottle age.
