Barolo, Pira, 2016

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Surely the best Pira Luca has made. A mix of delicate fragrant fruit aromas, and a sturdy, steadying but refined structure on the palate. Inviting, soft red berry and cherry fruit, both lifted and grounded. Great clarity, solidity and complexity. So complete. Facing Serralunga, a south east exposure, Pira is the lower part of the famous Rocche di Castiglione cru and is a monopole of the Roagna family. The soils here are a complex mixture of sand, clay limestone and blue marl. The vineyard exposure gives the wine that important underlying freshness. Vinified for 60 days on the skins before ageing for 5 years in large used wooden tanks. 14.12%

95/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2016 Barolo Pira is a gorgeous, complex wine endowed with terrific depth and tons of nuance that continues to open over time. Light on its feet and yet wonderfully deep, the 2016 has so much going on. Kirsch, sweet red cherry, spice, orange zest, menthol and spice fill out the layers effortlessly. Young Barolo tannins are present, but there is plenty of richness in the fruit to keep things in balance. The Pira is absolutely stellar in this tasting.
