    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

The family’s original 1.83ha Barbaresco vineyard from 1953, Paje is an ampitheatre in the centre of the Barbaresco commune facing south west and planted on limestone soils, sitting just below Rabaja, at 225 metres altitude. Close to the water’s edge, rooted in the marne sant’agat fossile bedrock, sheltered, & facing south west, the wines tend to be reserved, brooding, but refined and intense. Very complete, nervy and noble Barbaresco. The 2016 is in this classic style - bright minerally red fruit with notes of cherry stone and a strong mineral component. 14.10% 8,000 bottles were made.

The 2016 Barbaresco Pajè is one of the highlights in this range, as it offers gorgeous mid-palate depth with super-classic structure. Dark cherry, tobacco, licorice, leather and deeply-pitched spice accents infuse the 2016 with captivating nuance. The Pajè represents a bridge to the higher-end wines in this range. All of these wines have become pricey, but the Pajè is one of the larger-production wines and consistently delivers superb quality at a more approachable price than many of the other wines in the range. The 2016 is positively stellar.

    2016 Vintage

“A stress free vintage” according to Luca, 2016 was a year marked by cool spring and early summer temperatures; a typically warm and dry July; cooler than average August and a September of hot, sunny days and cool nights, culminating in a typical October harvest of warmth, sunshine and cool nights. The grapes were healthy and offered good levels of tannins, acidity and potential alcohol. The season has played its part in producing an exceptional vintage, and, along with the investment Luca has made in both cellars (most notably two brand new, top of the range, de-stemmers) and his continued rigour in the vineyards, has made for another huge step-change in quality here.
