Compared to the effusive nose of the Bocca d'Orzo, this offers something altogether deeper and more brooding. Fuller and more complete, darker fruit, richer a little denser and deeper. Powerful but so silky and suave, long gliding flavours of hedgerow fruit, bramble liqueur, spice and smoke saturate the palate. Long, echoing finish . Two prized parcels totalling 0.8HA within Calderara Sottana stand proud, having withstood the ravages of phylloxera, which arrived to Etna in 1881. Consequently, the vines are at least 140 years old, and on their original rootstocks. A fascinating and highly distinctive wine that carries its unique character and rich mineral intensity with a kind of weightless intensity. Remarkable in every sense. Produced in tiny quantities, it is one of Etna’s icon wines.
