Baron d'Ugo, IGT Toscana, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

More expansive red fruits and tighter tannins after the Il Campitello, Michele explained that while they love 2018 as a vintage for its raciness and perfume, hail in May meant that they had to select in the vineyard resulting in a small crop of nevertheless very good quality. More expansive red fruits on the nose, on the palate, tighter tannins and less open, more stone and earth and herb-driven this is all bound-up for the future with impressive measure and striking length. The same blend and the same vinification as Campitello (90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino) yet such a different wine. At 570 meters above sea level this southeast facing vineyard is the highest on the Monteraponi estate, indeed one of the very highest in Chianti Classico and it is now 48 years old. The soils are intensely rocky and poor - this is pure hard limestone, known locally as Albarese. Aged for 3 months in concrete and 36 months in large traditional cask.

critic reviews

95/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Monteraponi follows a Burgundy-adjacent farming philosophy that seeks to carve out distinct identities for strong red and white wines. The top-shelf red from the estate is the organic 2018 Baron'Ugo, a blend of 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts Canaiolo and Colorino for more color and vibrant fruit flavors. This vintage delivers a very clean and polished execution, and there is plenty of freshness, thanks to vineyard positioning at a cool and breezy 560 meters in elevation on limestone alberese soils. The oak is woven in a delicate manner in this wine. Production is 6,600 bottles. This is a little treasure from Tuscany.

The 2018 Baron'Ugo is super-impressive. Rich and yet nuanced, Baron'Ugo captures a striking expression of the estate. Dollops of Canaiolo and Colorino add nuance to the Sangiovese. Those complementary varieties work so well in making Baron'Ugo the most distinctive and evocative wine in this range from Monteraponi.
