    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Simply gorgeous. Enticing but vivid cherry and raspberry fruit with a tangy herb and rock salt tinge. The tannins are crisp and provide focus and structure to the wine, yet melt sumptuously into the mouth. A thrilling mix of seduction and vitality. A blend of 90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino. A 40 year old single vineyard is planted at 420 metres above sea level, facing south west, on Albarese (hard limestone) and Galestro (softer limestone) soils. The wine is aged in large French and Slavonian oak casks for 26 months.

The Monteraponi 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello is a gorgeous wine that delivers both power and elegance. These are two seemingly opposite characteristics that, in truth, complement each other beautifully, especially in the classic vintages such as this. Dark cherry fruit and forest berry are followed by light touches of wild rose and fresh potting soil. The wine is authentic and pure. It transports you to this beautiful corner of Tuscany with rolling hills and thick shrub brush, home to wild boar and roe dear. This wine will become more silky and streamlined with more bottle aging, and the wait will be absolutely worth it.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello is dark, powerful and super-expressive. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and menthol infuse this decidedly brooding, potent Riserva. A touch of new oak adds sweetness without being intrusive. Ample and strapping in feel, the 2016 could use a few more years in bottle to be at its best, but it is super-impressive, even today.
