Rosso di Montalcino, 2017

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

From one of the hottest and driest vintages ever, a maniacal selection of the grapes was achieved which therefore maintained an excellent richness of fruit and acidity, thanks above all to the timeliness of the harvest, which began on August the 25th and ended on September the 27th. The result is this rich and full-bodied but effortless Rosso, which has preserved the freshness and gentleness which is very much the estate’s hallmark. In addition to the ripe red fruits there are elegant aromas of aromatic herbs and Mediterranean scrub. Sweet, fine-boned tannins provide grip and definition and add to the savoury finish. A mini Brunello! The wine is produced from vineyards at 200, 300 and 450 m a.s.l and from various expositions, where the soil is poor and rocky, mainly composed by clay and limestone. The production area is located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, facing Orcia Valley where Orcia River runs through it. The pruning system is cordon spur. The harvest takes place manually; the grape is carried into the cellar in little cases. The grapes selection follows the same precision adopted for Brunello. Vinification is in oak vats, spontaneous fermentations lead by indigenous yeasts, long macerations and several pumping-over during the day. The wine ages 20 months in 30 hl oak casks and it was bottled in December 2019.

The Poggio di Sotto 2017 Rosso di Montalcino is a terrific wine and one of a handful of Rossi that I can recommend for longer cellar aging. This Rosso is built like a Brunello and shows the qualities needed to further its evolution. In this 20,000-bottle release, those attributes include complexity, freshness and a solid, mid-weight structure. You hardly feel the heat of the vintage, save for those hints of extra richness and concentration that add to the wine's important and pleasurable mouthfeel. This is a terrific Rosso with the long-term perspective of its big brother Brunello.

The 2017 Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino will need some time to fully open up. The nose is reticent, requiring quite a bit of coaxing, before a bouquet of fresh sweet strawberry, cherry, Tuscan spice box, dusty florals and hints of mint lift from the glass. On the palate, soft textures flood the senses, offset by tart red fruits, minerals and spice, as the 2018 seems to hover - well poised, almost weightless, yet still fully satisfying. The finish is long and very pretty, as fresh red fruits resonate above a tactile mix of acid, minerals and light tannin, giving way to a singular red floral note that seems to go on for minutes.
