Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Felton Road, Bannockburn, Chardonnay, 2019

Fruity with a flinty note. Showing both citrus and tropical notes but with bite. Crunchy nectarine flavours combine beautifully with clean, clear sicilian lemons. A really lovely, fresh but ripe acidity, a touch of stone and a faint but not disturbing spice note together with a lick of pineapple. Engaging, smooth rich fruit garlanded by a bright, persistent freshness. A blend of mixed Chardonnay clones including the famous Mendoza clone. Aged in 5% new oak for 13 months.

While the owner of Felton Road calls this wine its everyday Chardonnay, this would be the height of winemaking sophistication for many NZ producers. Whole-bunch-pressed and wild-fermented in French oak (less than 10% new) before undergoing periodic bâtonnage; there's no fining or filtration here either. The result is an understated and elegant Chardonnay with delicate white stone fruit flavors and a subtle element of oak-derived cashew nuts.

Felton Road

Felton Road is a boutique winery situated in Bannockburn, Central Otago which is the most southerly wine growing region in the world. Here small pockets of vineyard shadowed by snow-capped mountains have a unique microclimate that enables the production of fine wine even here on the outer limits of sustainable wine production. The hot days, cool nights and long dry autumns play a vital role in this. The winemaking philosophy here is a ‘softly, softly’ approach – at no point in the viticulture or winemaking processes is the human hand allowed to make its mark too heavily. Felton Road work in tandem with nature using organic treatments, manure and plant cover crops to ensure natural bio-diversity in the vineyards. Low yields are achieved through hand pruning and all picking takes place by hand. In the cellars Burgundian barrels are used for the oak-aged wines and bottling takes place without fining or filtration. The result is pure, light touch, vibrant wine.
