Wit Versnit, Patatsfontein Wines, 2023

Wit Versnit means “White Blend” and this replaces the old name Patatsblanc, with a refreshed label bringing this wine in line with the Old Vines Steen. The 2023 sees a slightly higher proportion of Colombard at just over 50%, yielding a wine of yellow fruits and citrus with hints of tea and lemon verbena. There is impressive substance and texture here for an entry-level wine and we often think of this as is South Africa’s answer to Chablis. Planted at 800m elevation on slate soils, raised in a combination of used barrel and concrete for 10 months.
