Els Escurcons, Priorato, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

This 100% Garnacha cuvee hails from the highest Licorella vineyard in Priorat and is aged in glass demi johns. Fermentation is carried out in clay amphora with 100% skins and stalks and pressed after 2-3 weeks. “Since 2015 I have learned to pay attention on the fermentation vessel. In classic enology they only really focus on the aging vessel but that is so wrong.” Ripe silky Grenache with fresh summer berries and plums. A cracked earth and ferrous note on the palate compliments the broad but at the same time focused mouthfeel. A wine with a spicy earthbound minerality and beautifully flowing, seamless ripe fruit.

Deep violet. A complex bouquet evokes spice-accented cherry, dark berry preserves, potpourri and baking spices, joined by a building licorice nuance. Sappy, palate-staining blueberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors show impressive depth as well as energy. Smoky mineral and black cardamom notes build on an impressively long finish that features mounting tannins and lingering florality.

The 2017 Els Escurcons was produced with pure Garnacha that was in full clusters but was crushed, and it matured in glass demijohn. This had just been bottled when I tasted it, and the wine was tight and a little reductive. So, an energetic decanting might be a good idea if you plan to open this anytime soon. I like the energy here, and there is tension and fine-grained tannins. It needs time. 3,000 bottles produced.
