    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

The Caldwell vineyard for a very long time made up half the blend of Randy Dunn’s Napa Cabernet bottling. Planted in 1983, this is by far and away the coolest site in the Di Costanzo portfolio. In 2022, having to wait for full ripeness has resulted in a dark fruited, supple, hedonically textured wine that is open, up front and ultra-engaging. A much more tender offering than is the norm for a Di Costanzo wine, but none the less delicious for it.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Caldwell Vineyard is another terrific wine in this range from Erin and Massimo Di Costanzo. It offers tons of old-school savoriness and Coombsville character but with the mid-weight structure and relative approachability that is typical of the year.

Yes, it's mainly Clone 337, which has a reputation for producing more aromatic wines, but in this vintage, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Caldwell Vineyard shows fewer of the charming herbal-floral nuances found in the 2021. It's still fresh, avoiding any sense of heaviness or heat, while offering scents of ripe cherries and hints of sage. It's medium to full-bodied, perhaps a bit open-knit, but soft, approachable and already easy to drink.

    2022 Vintage

A vintage that offers a measure of immediacy and up-front charm that you don’t always find in young Di Costanzo wines. Charlie Smith, from high on Moon Mountain, brims with red fruit and floral notes in a bright chiselled structure that fizzes with energy. Caldwell, a vineyard in Coombsville that used to make up half of the Dunn bottling, picked after the heat dome, is darker and ultra supple, with a soft skinned hedonistic vibe that is hugely compelling – it reminded us ever so slightly of a Mitjaville wine. The famed Montecillo, from slightly higher up Moon Mountain, has a more restrained intensity, touches of wild herb and dried flower over dark fruit and firm minerals. It is the most tannic of the three and will require longest to show its true colours. All three are fascinating visions of singular Californian Cabernet vineyards.
