We are delighted to offer the 2024 whites from star Condrieu (and St. Joseph) producer Andre Perret. With daughter Marie adding her own fine touches to the winemaking, particularly on the reds, quality is at an all-time high at this domaine and in our view, they set the benchmark for the most ravishing, detailed and elegant wines in the appellation. Where some producers tend towards opulence in their Condrieu, and others have swung in the direction of over-leanness to the point of simplicity, Perret’s stable offers both poise and complexity – pulling the best elements of this classic style together.
Leading Rhone critic Jeb Dunnuck is effusive in his praise for the 2024s, doling out 92pts for the deliciously accessible St. Joseph Blanc and 92-94pts for the classic Condrieu. At single vineyard level, he awards 93-95pts for Clos Chanson and an impressive 95-97pts for the truly beautiful Chery, making it one of the top whites of the vintage.
We were struck more than ever by the balance of the St Joseph Blanc, a 50/50 blend of Marsanne and Roussanne that offers neat, crisp citrus, white and green fruits in a textural but refreshing style. In the classic Condrieu 2024, there is a lightness and transparency, all fragrance and detail, with citrus, honey, white flowers and a gentle but steadying acid line. Clos Chanson is a single vineyard that reflects the spiciness and textural-qualities of Condrieu, from vines hitting 60 years old. We struggle to recall a vintage with more clarity, saltiness or persistence than the supremely refined 2024; think violets, stony-spice and waves of clear-cut golden fruit. Chery, as ever, is stylish and precise, more lifted with a touch of oak framing intense and succulent white, yellow and tropical fruits, offering a fine stoniness and sherbety acidity. A great vintage here.
Please note that the reds will be offered when physical in autumn, though advance orders can be taken and the wines are highly recommended. The classic St. Joseph Rouge is £105 IB/ 6x75cl while Les Grisieres is £145 IB/ 6x75cl.
