Burgundys festive stars six exceptional bottles for your festive table

It may seem absurdly early to be thinking about festive dining or seasonal gifts. However, with the big TV ads already out (before Bonfire Night!), they are a vivid reminder that we are less than seven weeks from the big day. So, sadly, now is the time to start thinking ahead.

The six wines featured below are a selection of our top value picks from Burgundy at their most elegant and accessible. Wines of poise, balance, and versatility that come highly recommended. Domaine de la Chapelle’s Ax-B, 2023 is an extremely good Pouilly Fuisse that hails from the excellent, 1er Cru Aux Boutieres vineyard, but that also includes a section of the same vineyard that was not classified – thus the Ax-B naming (and stunning value).

Mâcon Milly-Lamartine, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon, 2023 dances brightly across your palate, delivering very pretty, floral, orchard fruit and a hint of ripe stone fruit. From Héritiers Lafon’s highest Mâcon vineyard at an altitude of 350 metres, hence the tantalising mineral edge.

Chablis Beauroy 1er Cru, Laurent Tribut, 2023 won 90-92 points from Neal Martin. This classic, traditionally styled Premier Cru is fresh and vibrant but with a beguiling sense of richness too.

Robert Chevillon’s Bourgogne Rouge, 2021 comes from an exclusive, single parcel of Pinot in Nuits. Crisp and pure, its fine cherry and red berry fruits plus gentle tannins caress your palate. Truly lovely.

Marsannay Les Echezots, Château de Marsannay, 2019 is a racy, deep yet delicate red. Even if Marsannay has neither a Premier Cru nor Grand Cru, the quality of its winemaking deserves such a title.

And finally, another real show stopper. Mercurey En Sazenay 1er Cru, 2020 comes from one of those ‘unicorn-rare’ Burgundy domaines that consistently deliver exceptional quality at very decent prices. Génot-Boulanger is a fourth generation family estate whose current performance is, as Jancis Robinson MW says, ‘greater than their price level'.
