Grosse Gewächse (GG) represents the pinnacle of German dry white and red wines — the equivalent of France’s Grand Cru. These wines come exclusively from Grosse Lagen, the finest vineyard sites as classified by the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), and are crafted under some of the strictest quality standards in the wine world.
All GG wines are trocken (dry), with a maximum of 9g/l residual sugar, allowing the unique terroir of each vineyard to shine. The grapes must be fully ripe and hand-harvested, and yields are capped at just 50 hectolitres per hectare to ensure concentration and purity. Wines must be fermented and matured in the producer’s own cellars, and white GGs cannot be released before 1st September of the year after harvest — red GGs even later.
Stylistically, GG wines are known for their precision, minerality, and structure. Riesling GG is the most common expression, but other varieties such as Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Silvaner, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) also appear in this elite category. While beautiful in youth, GG wines are particularly celebrated for their ageing potential, often revealing increasing layers of complexity over 10–15 years or more.
