Tenuta delle Terre Nere Single Crus – Including James Suckling’s Top Italian Wine of the Year 2025.
San Lorenzo 2023 – No 5 in the Vinous top 100 wines of 2025
Tenuta delle Terre Nere represents the gold standard for single vineyard Etna wines. When Marco de Grazia first dubbed the northern Etna slopes the “Burgundy of the Mediterranean”, many thought he was mad. But time has proven him right. His continued search for prized old vines in uniquely volcanic soils, allied to gentle and reflective winemaking brings us to this stunning collection, from two vintages which, despite their challenges, rank amongst the best the estate has ever made. Pound for Pound, these are probably the best Italian wines money can buy.
Of specific note is the San Lorenzo 2023, which was placed No5 on the Vinous Top 100 list of 2025 and awarded James Suckling’s Italian Red Wine of the Year 2025.
“The volcanic vineyards of Mount Etna – planted on steep slopes reaching up to 750 meters – continue to produce wines of singular identity, shaped by their minerality, balance and tension. Etna wines are no longer just a trend. They’re competing with the world’s best while maintaining their sense of place. With vivid fruit, racy acidity and vibrant energy, Etna reds and whites are compelling on release – and at under $80 a bottle, they offer exceptional value.
One of the clearest examples of that potential is the Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso San Lorenzo 2023, our Italian Wine of the Year. Made from nerello mascalese planted in the 1950s, it captures pure volcanic expression with aromas of wild herbs, blood orange, red cherry and cinnamon. The palate is fleshy and full-bodied yet lifted by crisp acidity and silky tannins.” – James Suckling.
This year’s unmissable collection is as accomplished, complex and defiantly volcanic in profile as we’ve come to expect from Marco de Grazia.
Adaptive winemaking to emphasise purity, florality and a natural bewitching spice, the Terre Nere single crus continue to represent extraordinarily good value and are often drunk on the best restaurant tables in the world. The 2024 whites are amongst the most impressive they have made, whilst the 2023 reds are intense, deep, and imbued with a structure that suggests they will reward cellaring.
