Pettenthal, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2023

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Serious, complex, wild perfume with lemon juice, salted melon and white pepper notes gracing the palate. Persistent, classy, tucked up, Pettenthal is the more sober and sophisticated sibling of the more enthusiastic, gregarious Hipping. The main difference is that in Pettenthal the iron rich slate tends to be composed of larger slate, which contributes to the wine’s signature sense of composure. At 73 degrees, Pettenthal is the steepest vineyard in the Rheinhessen. The Kühling-Gillot vines were planted in the 1970s.

critic reviews

96/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2023 Nierstein Pettenthal GG opens another chapter in the context of KG. The Pettenthal is very intense yet pure and, in a nice way, reductive on the nose that is provided with concentrated and spicy fruit intertwined with flinty and iodine notes of crushed stones. Rich and intense but always elegant on the palate, this is a dense, savory and stimulating, very complex and finely tannic Riesling that deserves our patience. It's remarkably frisky on the finish, subtly intense and thus very long. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Niersteiner Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs blends flinty reduction with orange peel and crushed yarrow. The palate is superbly zesty, alive and energetic, tingling with tangerine and orange but also with that stony, salty herbal savor. It’s beautifully dynamic, driving purposefully forward. Like a shot in the arm, it’s so precise, stony and vivid on the finish. (Bone-dry)
