Barolo, Riserva, Bricco Voghera, 2014

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Deep roots and small berries produces very mineral, very complete suave wines here, the 2014 Riserva super complex, seemingly steeped in herbs with a touch of vermouth, citrus and quinine. Fresh and engaging, nothing dominant bar a beautiful glow and fluidity to the wine – ready to be broached but with the stuffing to keep going. The vines here average 100 years old. The Riserva grapes come from a south facing plot of 0.85ha at 360m, the soils are clay-limestone, and the wine is raised in large cask for five years and a further five years in bottle. It is only bottled in the best vintages.

This is the big gun from Luigi Scavino's Azelia. In the bottle with the white and gold label, the 2014 Barolo Riserva Bricco Voghera reveals a medium-dark appearance with budding tertiary tones of cherry confit, campfire ash, tar and road pavement. The wine is open-knit and offers broad intensity with a baritone personality. Despite the freshness of the vintage, it lacks some of the high notes and the tension that Nebbiolo is often capable of giving. I would not extend the drinking window much beyond the 20-year mark. This is a limited release of 3,000 bottles.

The 2014 Barolo Riserva Bricco Voghera one of the most compelling wine I have ever tasted from Azelia. Sweet, aromatic, and inviting, the 2014 possesses striking inner perfume and sweetness as well as silky tannins. Sweet red and purple berry fruit, mint, blood orange and spice infuse the 2014 with magnificent nuance and complexity. In 2014, the Scavinos had the courage to bottle their Riserva. For that, they were rewarded with a truly epic Barolo. The 2014 is flat-out stunning. What a wine!
