Barolo, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

A little reticent and subdued on the nose; however, a little aeration coaxes out the fruit, revealing a palate of crisp, edgy but sweet red fruitinfused with fresh herbal notes. Made from a selection of grapes from45-year-old vines across five different Crus from the Castiglione (30%percent) and Serralunga (70%) communes. The wine is aged in large Slavonian oak "botti" / barrels, so there is very little oak influence.

critic reviews

90/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Luigi Scavino's classic Barolo shows a sweet spot on the bouquet with baked cherry and sweet plum. The Azelia 2018 Barolo does not show the depth or complexity of past vintages; however, the wine offers lots of basic Nebbiolo crispness and plenty of wild berry flavors. There are earthy notes on the close with some light spice.

93/100Susan Hulme,The Wine Independent

The 2018 Azelia Barolo is quite biscuity and pleasantly charred, with burnt oak and tar and top notes of new oak. It has a very nice texture, with fine, seamless tannins and a crushed chalky texture on the finish. Moderately concentrated, it is smooth with gentle and creamy integrated oak spice and a nice freshness.

The 2018 Barolo is a light-bodied, easygoing wine to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet dried cherry, spice, orange peel, tobacco and spice are all laced together. The 2018 is open and ready to drink. I would prefer to drink this over the next handful of years before the fruit fades. The straight Barolo is a blend of seven parcels in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba.
