Barolo, 2020

justerini & brooks tasting note

A slender, leaner-styled medium bodied Barolo Classico with good acidity, a mix of red and dark fruits and an herbaceous edge. The Azelia Barolo Classico is made from a selection of grapes from 50-year-old vines in seven different crus across the Castiglione Falletto (30%) and Serralunga d’Alba (70%) communes, a big part of which is Cerretta and Bricco Voghera. The wine is aged in large Slavonian oak botti for two years, so there is very little oak influence.

critic reviews

91/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

With fruit blended from across seven vineyards, the Azelia 2020 Barolo has a savory character with aromas of dark fruit, scorched earth and campfire ash. The wine is lean and fresh in terms of mouthfeel, but it also shows the informality of this accessible and food-friendly vintage. In the case of this wine, it finishes with diluted flavors, but you still get the tart freshness of the Nebbiolo grape. This vintage is poised for near-term drinking. Production is 27,300 bottles.

88/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2020 Barolo is soft and easygoing, with lovely forward fruit. Pretty floral and savory top notes lend aromatic presence. There's a bit of firmness in the tannin at this stage. Even so, this looks like like more of a near- and medium-term proposition. The straight Barolo is a blend of various sites, including Cerretta, Bricco Voghera, Altenasso, Solanotto, San Rocco, Broglio and Cerrati.
