Fratelli Alessandria

Barolo, Gramolere, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

More voluptuous and less chiselled than the Monvigliero, still with requisite structure but so different in shape. Well-covered, fulsome, mouth-coating bramble fruit with notes of dried orange peel, asian spices and a hint of vanilla. Solid, deep and powerful, this will need some time to come round. From Vittore’s mother side of the family, this is a vineyard that came from the Manzone estate in Monforte in 2001. The vines are 55 years old. Higher than Verduno, at over 400 metres above sea level and with browner/ red soils this yields completely different wines. After a month of gentle maceration, the wine is then aged for 3 years in large wooden vats.

critic reviews

93/100Susan Hulme,The Wine Independent

The 2017 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Gramolere has a lively nose - it is spicy, vibrant and nuanced. Lively too on the palate, it is very forceful with, fine-textured, chalky tannins. Energetic and characterful. It needs more time, wait 3 years, drink for 20.

With some 7,000 bottles released, the Fratelli Alessandria 2017 Barolo Gramolere gives us a taste of fruit from Monforte d'Alba, as opposed to Verduno, where this winery is based. The Nebbiolo from this further-flung village shows deep power and equal grace, and you feel the contrast in this warm-vintage wine. This Barolo sits firmly on the palate with dark shades of cherry, blackcurrant and wild plum. These fruit tones cede to iron ore, rusty nail and dark licorice. This wine shows power and almost sanguine or earthy intensity. The wine will hit the market in September 2021.

The 2017 Barolo Gramolere is a powerful, tightly wound wine full of Monforte tension. Readers will have to be patient. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and sage add layers of aromatic intrigue to this firm, hulky Barolo. The 2017 takes all the Gramolere signatures and turns up the volume.
