Barolo, Monvigliero, 2020
Ebullient ripe red fruits, sweet raspberry with a citrus-rich iodine, orangey bite. More intense and complex, herbal and grippy with a grainy focus and light, reverberating acidity. Attractive and more accessible in youth than it ordinarily might be – a finer-pitched, more delicate style of Monvigliero. Alessandria has a sizeable 1.4ha and first bottled the wine as a single vineyard in 1978. Aged for three years in 25hl Slavonian oak casks.

This is a retaste. Nebbiolo from Verduno in the north of the Barolo appellation enjoys good exposures and plenty of light. The Scavino family farms one hectare in this village on loose soils with sand and yellowish marl. Made with fully destemmed fruit, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero has an elegant nose with rose, red berry and dried herb. The mouthfeel in this warm vintage is quite generous, and the wine offers concentrated fruit, bold cherry flavors and sweet tannins.
Scavino’s 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is bright and aromatically effusive, as Barolos from this site tend to be, but on the palate, it is quite a bit more reserved. It will be interesting to see if the 2020 emerges with time in bottle, as today, it is dominated by fierce tannins. Dried fruit, tobacco, mint and worn-in leather linger. Ideally, I would like to see more Monvigliero sensuality here.
