Barolo, Gramolere
Fratelli Alessandria

Barolo, Gramolere, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

A steep Monforte site, at twice the elevation of Verduno with more sandstone-based soils. Pointed, steadying at first, but not heavy as it can be, with salty iron-rich minerals and sweet forest fruits, this is 2018 is very complete, promising notes of salted strawberries, griotte cherries and some brambly herbs. So harmonious, and more accessible at this stage than in most years, there is a lovely, long ripe wash of tannin and yet it is by no means austere. From Vittore’s mother side of the family, this is a vineyard that came from the Manzone estate in Monforte in 2001. The vines are 55 years old. Higher than Verduno, at over 400 metres above sea level and with browner/red soils this yields completely different wines. After a month of gentle maceration, the wine is then aged for 3 years in large wooden vats.

The 2018 Barolo Gramolere is another gorgeous wine from Alessandria. It has the same translucent character I saw from barrel. The tannins remain a bit edgy, perhaps because of what appears to be a bit less fruit depth. Savory, floral and mineral notes abound in this mid-weight, classically built Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria.

With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the 2018 Barolo Gramolere is linear and tight with etched aromas of crisp forest berry, iron ore, blood orange, blue violet and crushed stone. The wine is bright and expressive with time in the glass, but it takes a while to open fully. The tannins are firm but integrated. It should be interesting to retaste this Barolo after the 10-year mark.

Most of the Fratelli Alessandria wines are from Verduno but the steep 55-60 year old Gramolere vineyard is in Montforte d'Alba, 400 meters above sea level and has a very sandy sand /clay mix. The 2018 Barolo Gramolere from Fratelli Alessandria has flinty, slightly smoky notes. It has a firm structure with slightly irony, orange peel notes and firm upright tannins. It is chunky and assertive and a really characterful, attractive wine.
