Barolo, San Lorenzo di Verduno
Fratelli Alessandria

Barolo, San Lorenzo di Verduno, 2017

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Spicier, more brooding and structured than the Barolo Comune di Verduno, but velvety with dark berry fruit infused with notes of cloves and orange peel. San Lorenzo is all about breadth, fullness and openness, this particular incarnation is just perhaps a little more muscular and serious than usual, and will need a year or two more in bottle than the come-hither Barolo Verduno. A Verduno vineyard near Monvigliero but less steep and with very different soils – silt and sand rather than the white limestone of Monvigliero. After a month of gentle maceration the wine is then aged for 3 years in large wooden vats.

critic reviews

93/100Susan Hulme,The Wine Independent

The 2017 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno has a bright color and lively peppery red fruits on the nose. The mid-palate is round and spicy with delicate strawberry flavors. It is juicy, very tangy and savory at the same time. The perception of tannins is grainier, drier and more savory. Verduno, close to the Tanaro river with its cooler winds, seems to bring out a spicy pepperiness. This vibrant, spicy, pepperiness makes these wines so characterful.

95/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

Rich, bold and effusive, the 2017 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno shows the darker side of Nebbiolo from Verduno, as it always does. Black cherry, gravel, licorice, game, spice and cured meats are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop in the glass. Broad and ample, with tons of punch, the 2017 San Lorenzo delivers the goods, and then some.
