Barolo, San Lorenzo di Verduno, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Lots of juicy fruits are on display in the San Lorenzo di Verduno. More upfront and caressing with svelte and charming flavours of redcurrant, sweet cranberry, ripe strawberry and raspberry with some suave peachy flesh and spice notes such as caraway. Mouthwatering yet full and lovely, subtle supporting flavours of brioche, green olive and white pepper, this is a Barolo with lots going on, delivered in a round and supple style, there is something quite Burgundian about it. A Verduno vineyard near Monvigliero but less steep and with very different soils – silt and sand rather than the white limestone of Monvigliero. After a month of gentle maceration the wine is then aged for 3 years in large wooden vats.

critic reviews

94/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2018 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno is a wild, beguiling beauty. Wild cherry, sage, lavender, blood orange, scorched earth and menthol give the 2018 an exotic quality that is so appealing. Dark and tannic, the San Lorenzo shows the more virile side of Verduno off to great effect. This is impressive.

The Fratelli Alessandria 2018 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno opens to a delicate and ethereal personality with fluttering aromas of blue flower, cassis, candied grapefruit and white pepper. The bouquet is fragrant and lifted, giving way to a subtle but very elegant mouthfeel. The wine's texture is fine and incredibly polished.

95/100Susan Hulme,The Wine Independent

The 2018 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno has spent 3 years in large 25 hectoliter oak botte yet it retains its bright, ruby color. The aromas are of spice, pepper, and lightly fragrant cherry with quite fine but grippy tannins on the palate. There is a very nice flow and harmony to this wine. The finish is bright, juicy, enjoyable, and very drinkable. Vittore Alessandria explains how they like a gentle extraction: “We have a long and soft extraction, with 1 month on the skins from the end of fermentation. We keep the cap wet, but we don't crush the cap, so there are very low amounts of sediment from extraction.”
