Lip-smacking dark cherry, sage and fresh hedgerow notes interspersed with serious briny, iron-rich aromas and complex notes of spearmint, cumin and mineral salts, the 2021 comes armed with serious vibrancy. It is super fresh and energetic, long and vital – a truly great Barolo. From Serralunga d’Alba, Brea is home to the oldest vines of the Brovia estate – the Ca Mia plot was planted in 1958. A 65-year-old monopole vineyard with a relatively high amount of limestone soils as well as clay that faces south southeast – it is situated on the eastern side of the commune. The wines tend to show dark, layered and silky fruits with supporting floral and menthol notes.

The Brovia 2021 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia is another beauty from a stellar vintage. This expression is slightly more floral initially, in a playful way, but fruit is from Serralunga d'Alba, so you get the power and those characteristic notes of iron and candied orange peel as well. It has it all, including a bolder and bigger texture, not in the sense of volume but in the sense of length. The wine remains extremely polished and fine overall. Fruit comes from one hectare on clay limestone soils at 300 to 370 meters above sea level. Production is 5,000 bottles.

The 2021 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia is a rich, potent wine. Sage, menthol, gravel, licorice, incense and dried flowers run through a core of dark Serralunga fruit. This sepia-toned, brooding Barolo needs time, but it possesses notable textural depth and power. Time in the glass brings out the wine's breadth and overall presence. The 2021 offers a captivating mix of finesse and intensity, the duality that is at the essence of what Barolo is all about.
