Barolo, Brunate, Riserva, 2011

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Voluptuous, enveloping and ample but without being over the top. Classy and profound, this offers a myriad of bold, dark hedgerow and forest fruit flavours with an added savoury dimension of undergrowth, cinnamon and cooling minerals. Big and very beautiful. This is the same wine as the Vecchie Vigne only since the 2009 vintage it is now released as a Riserva, a change purely in name only. From a single parcel of old vines within Brunate planted in 1942, produced in the same way as the other Cru wines – aged for 24 months in 25% new oak barrels - but kept an extra two years in bottle. Only 800 bottles were made.

The 2011 Barolo Riserva Brunate is released after seeing two extra years in the bottle (as opposed to barrel). Fruit is selected from the oldest vines planted within Marengo's one-hectare plot of Brunate. The 2013 annata Barolo shows more sweetness and bright fruit. This riserva expression, on the other hand, offers an even more rigid quality of tannic firmness with less of a fresh-fruit margin. This wine will be produced in 2012, 2013 and likely in 2015 and 2016. The 2014 vintage will definitely be skipped. This is a layered and rich expression that still needs time to peel back and develop in slow motion.
