Barolo, Brunate, Riserva, 2019

justerini & brooks tasting note

Tasting the Brunate Riserva in this line up shows a commonality in 2019 and 2021, but also contrasts. Of course, the Riserva comes from a parcel with more lime and austerity in the soil, but even so, it is today the most impressive aromatically, sharing the sense of lift and vitality that pervades the regular Brunate 2021. The difference here is that the fruit is altogether a little darker, more sapid, with a strapping, tannic force that presents a more youthful profile. If 2021 is typified by spice and Alpine cleanse, then 2019 Riserva is soil, fruit and muscle. A fantastic Riserva that will go the distance. The Riserva comes from old vines the heart of Brunate, the upper middle part, planted in 1942. Produced in the same way as the other wines with 24 months in 20% new oak barrels, then kept for an extra two years in bottle.

critic reviews

96/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Showing a darker color and more natural concentration (next to the 2021 vintage), the M. Marengo 2019 Barolo Riserva Brunate is a wine of incredible depth and potency, yet it remains fine and elegant all the while. It does carry bigger shoulders with dark fruit, damson plum and spice, but it also shows those ethereal tones of crushed limestone and dried mint that are specific to Brunate. It reveals important depth, with a velvety, chalky quality to the tannins. The 2019 is soon edging into its drinking window, but more patience is required. I'd give it another five years in bottle.
